Economists at the Dodge Construction Outlook Conference say to expect continued growth in 2018. “The economic outlook for 2018 is quite positive. Both consumers and businesses are confident in the future," said economist Cristian deRitis at the conference. He added that the 2017-2018 economic peak will most likely be followed by a recession in 2020, but that it will be nothing like the “Great Recession” of 2007-2009.

The new site, which we’re calling our Client Care Portal, completely replaces the Support section of our company website. The new portal contains an online help desk where you can enter, review, and update your support cases. Several aSa user guides have been updated to reflect changes introduced in aSa v14.2:
- Estimating – Added section on how to create and use new custom report summaries.
- Bar List – Update Fabricated Mesh documentation to reflect new functionality that allows you to draw cut and bend lines on your mesh images.
- Production – Added section on how to reassign bend classes by dragging and dropping items onto pictures that represent each class.

Current supported versions of aSa software include: v13.1, v12.2, and v12.1 (which retires June 30, 2014). Our next version, v14.1, is currently in QA testing. aSa consultants will continue to provide phone and e-mail support for all products, including retired versions. However, we will not make any code changes - including patches, upgrades, or enhancements - for versions that have been retired. If you require a "fix" to a particular product, and your version has been retired, you must upgrade to the newest version.

Although “ERO: Concrete Recycling Robot” sounds like something from science fiction, the technology is real. Conceived by Omer Haciomeroglu, a student at Sweden’s Umeå Institute of Design, ERO was “designed to efficiently disassemble concrete structures without any waste, dust or separation and enable reclaimed building materials to be reused for new prefabricated concrete buildings,” according to a release on ISDA.com (a website for the Industrial Designers Society of America). Because the rebar is “cleaned” of concrete, it can be easily reused or recycled.

It’s the most important male jewelry and can reflect the personality and strength of its owner. I chose concrete because it is a noble, honest and robust material," says designer Dzmitry Samal. The Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) was recently accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer (ASD). The scope of CRSI’s standards activities will be to develop and maintain consensus standards for design, detailing, fabrication, placement, and construction of assemblies consisting of steel reinforcement and associated products used in concrete and masonry construction. aSa is long-time CRSI member, and aSa staff have served on many CRSI committees throughout the years.

A recent TV news feature on CBS Dallas-Fort Worth explains how mobile devices, such as the iPad, have taken the “print” out of blueprint. In the video, a reporter goes on-site with construction workers doing renovations at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The news piece explains how using the iPad for blueprint storage on the DFW Airport project saved over one million dollars compared to printing traditional plans. Industry feature: Concrete structures for London Olympics emphasize sustainability

Reducing the “embodied carbon footprint” — carbon releases along the complete material supply chain — was a huge focus for the builders of London’s Olympic Park, explains a recent article in ConcreteConstruction.net. The Olympic site in Lower Lea Valley, a former industrial area five miles from downtown London, allowed builders to reuse or recycle a large percentage of construction waste on-site during the building process. For example, recycled aggregate used in the project’s concrete accounted for 188,000 tons of the 1.1 million total, reducing the carbon footprint of the concrete by 33,069 tons and eliminating over 70,000 road vehicle movements. A recent article on the AECB website explains how one company has embraced BIM “as a key tool for innovation, collaboration and the rigorous attention to detail needed for sustainable design that really works.” The story provides a nice overview of what BIM (Building Information Modeling) is all about and how it is being embraced in the design and construction industries. The AECB is a network of individuals and companies with a common aim of promoting sustainable building.

Students to race canoes … made of concrete

heigh Twenty-two teams of engineering students from around the country will race canoes made of concrete June 14-16 at the University of Nevado, Reno. Each year, more than 5,000 students design and construct canoes, then they compete at regional Civil Engineers races to determine the national qualifiers. The five divisions of races, which include sprint and endurance events, are only part of the competition. The teams’ canoes are also judged on presentation, design, and final product. heigh Each year in Canada, competitors gather in the coldest month of the year to race 300 lb. sleds … made of concrete. The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race “is an annual nation-wide celebration of innovation and engineering spirit,” according to event organizers. The rules dictate that toboggans must include a roll bar, running surfaces composed only of concrete while maintaining a total weight less than 300 lbs. This year, Ryerson University won the main race and the prize for building the most sustainable concrete toboggan. Read more at gnctr2012.com.

ACI Developing Standards for BIM in Cast-in-Place Concrete

heigh A task group of the American Concrete Institute's Committee on Building Information Modeling (BIM) is developing a manual for the exchange of data in cast-in-place concrete projects. Ultimately, the document will serve as a foundation for developing an industry standard for file/data transfer between various BIM software products. Report on environmental footprint of concrete construction released for public comment

heigh A committee of industry professionals, working with researchers at the University of Washington's College of Built Environment's Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) have developed a set of standards that will allow architects and engineers to report the environmental footprint of concrete construction projects. The standard has been posted online for stakeholder input. The deadline for public comments is March 31.

Industry News: Concrete roads could save billions over asphalt, according to recent PCA report

heigh Since 2005, liquid asphalt prices have increased 12 percent annually, while concrete has only risen by 4 percent. A recent report by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) concludes that states are not taking full advantage of the cost savings that concrete affords. The report says that flawed procurement practices used by many state departments of transportation (DOT) are to blame because they inaccurately indicate lower “initial bid” and “lifecycle” costs for asphalt compared to concrete. Industry News: Construction Material Prices Fall in June; Still Higher for the Quarter

heigh After three months of increases, construction material prices fell by 0.9 percent in June. Overall, however, prices are up 0.8 percent for the second quarter and 4.2 percent higher than June 2009. Economists say it’s too early to tell whether the drop is an anomaly or a trend.

ACI Announces New Executive VP

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) is pleased to announce Ronald G. Burg, formerly vice president at CTLGroup, has been named executive vice president of ACI. Current ACI executive vice president William R. Tolley will retire from ACI at the end of June, after 35 years of service to the Institute. Repairing Highways with Precast Slabs

Minimal traffic interruptions and concrete durability are among the benefits of using precast slabs for highway repair work, according to an article at Concrete Construction Online. While material and labor costs prohibit precast from being a viable option for large-scale highway construction, “Precast systems are worth investigating for rapid overnight repairs where pavements cannot be closed,” says Sam Tyson, P.E., Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) task manager in the Concrete Pavement Technology Program.

Bauma Exhibitors Note Growing Sales and Optimism Despite Lower Attendance

Flight restrictions due to the volcanic ash cloud over Europe resulted in 15% fewer visitors to the Bauma International Trade Fair in 2010 compared to 2007. In fact, aSa’s Scott Leib and Tim Berg would have missed Bauma if they hadn’t been in Germany the previous week to attend the Wire Dusseldorf show. Despite the downturn in visitors, several exhibitors said the show had an optimistic tone. Ralf Wezel, secretary-general of the Committee for European Construction Equipment, Brussels said in a statement, “The mood in the industry shows that, in Europe, the bottom of the cycle is now behind us. Confidence has returned.” Other construction industry executives say product demand is rising. Read more at Engineering News Record.

ACI's convention Twitter account reports 1360 attendees, so far, while the ACI website includes a YouTube video explaining what to expect at the convention.

CRSI Epoxy Interest Group Publishes Performance Report

2010 Big Year for Stimulus Money and Infrastructure

Most of the money from the U.S. government’s 2009 stimulus plan is still in Washington, but it is expected to benefit thousands of infrastructure projects in 2010. Contractors should see $76 billion in stimulus funding this year, according to Mike Pickett, CEO of Onvia.
